Abstract

The analysis of the glacier movements with the satellite imagery has been investigated and a procedure has been set up to obtain for each glacier: the surface, the perimeter and the length of the glaciers snout. The surface of 720 glaciers of the Italian Alps has been estimated with an average deviation of 14 % and the surface evolution error is less than 20 % for 82 % of glaciers. From the movements and lengthes of the glaciers snout it has been obtained that the annual surface fluctuations of 74 % glaciers are detectable with the present spatial resolution in satellites images.
