Pages 77-84

Abstract

The results of the investig atio ns carriedou t in 1997·98 in the Adamello Glacier area arc discussed in this paper. Aim of the study was mapping the glacier surfa ce and bedrock in order to better understand the dyn amics and calcula te the volume of (he glacier. Aerial p hotogrammerry and Gl’Svassisred ground pe netrating radar sur,’eys both from the surface and by helicopter were carried OU[ . D;Ha were processed in ,\RC/ INFO environment. The overall volume of the glacier reaches the value of about 870million cubic meters, with a maximum ice thickness higher than 2-10 01 in the Pian di Neve area. A good fit with the results of the p revious surveys, carriedOUt in the upper part of the glacier from the beginning of the 60s, can beobserved, confirming that the Ada r nello glacier can be considered the largest alpine glacier.
