This paper describes various examples of geomorphological research, which in c10se relation lO slratigraphic, geopedological, structuralgeological data as welJ as other data, permilted either the idenlification of activity or the exclusion of the presence of «linear neotectonic c1ements). Tbe examples described are situated in northeastern Italy. A norma! fault has displaced by a few meters morainic deposits of the Upper Pleistocene on the eastern side of lake Garda in the area oC S. Vigilio. Along the Modena Apennine margin between Sassuolo and Maranello, marine sediments of the Lower Pleistocene proved to be arranged vcrtically or overllll”"ncd by a tectonic clcment that could not be idcntified with certainly (flexure, breaklhrusl or fault). New data confirm Holocene aClivily of a faull in the arca of Mazzin (Dolomites). Morphological signs of recenl activity of faults revealed in the subsurface were identified in the area of Mantova by means of seismic prospecting. Neotectonic phenomcna are exeluded in the case of f1uvioglacial faulted deposirs of the Upper Pleislocene revealed in the vicinity of Manerba and Desenzano (western side of lake Garda) and in tile vicinity of Dolcè (iower Adige vaUey). ln conclusion, the authors confirm rhe importance of carrying aut thorough investigalions before attributing teClonic causes lo evident faulting or folding, even when Quaternary deposits are involved. They also stress that even in more delailed studies there may be some amount of uncerlainty as to the nature and characteristics of Ihe phenomenon examined. When the tectonie nature oC the phenomenon has been identified, but c1emems far precise dating are lacking, it is possible to date a tcctonic movcment by analyzing the rclationships existing between deposits whose age is certain and geomorphological cvidencc linked to thc movement itself.
