Geomorphology of the Central and Southern Alps (1-11)
This field trip concerns the landscape and landforms connected with glacial and slope processes and with neotectonic activity. In the first part of the trip, a Pleistocene moraine amphitheatre will be observed between the Po plain and the Pre Alps. Subsequently, the Valtellina region, characterized by large landslides (one of which destroyed some villages and dammed the Adda River valley in 1987) will be visited. Then two days will be devoted to the Holocene glacial morphology in the Central Alps. In the last part of the trip, neotectonic landforms will be observed in the Giudicariense area and (hy boat) along the Garda lake coast.

Mountains, hills and plains in North-western Italy (11-22)
The trip will cover some areas of North-western Italy (Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta) in which a large variety of natural and anthropic landscapes are present. It will be possible to observe some particular aspects of fluvial geomorphology along the Po river (close to Piacenza). Subsequently, the hilly region of Monferrato will be visited. In this area some soil conservation problems linked to vineyard culture will be discussed. Then, after a stop in Torino, the trip will move to Ivrea and Aosta areas in which spectacular Pleistocene moraines can be observed. The last part of the trip will be focused on recent and present glacial features in the Monte Bianco valley.

Geomorphology and Quaternary evolution of Central Italy (22-44)
Environmental geology and applied geomorphology of urban landslides (geologic-geomorphic aspects of the great Ancona landslide and of the Montelparo medieval town). Quaternary geomorphic evolution and neotectonics of intra – Apenninic depressions (Colfiorito, Campo Imperatore, Fucino) and the periadriatic belt. Evolution of a karstic complex (Frasassi cave), developed in a recently uplifted active tectonic area. Middle – Upper Pleistocene stratified slope – waste deposits and their relationships with terraced alluvial deposits; fluvial erosion and sedimentation from middle Pleistocene to Holocene. Glacial and periglacial Pleistocene landforms and deposits in Campo Imperatore (Gran Sasso d’Italia, Abruzzo) and, possibly, in the Calderone glacier area. Volcanic morphology and geological structure in the Sabatini Mts.

Fundaments for a geomorphological overview on Roma and its surrounding
This field trip illustrates geological and geomorphological features of the Roma area, shore dynamics in the neighbouring of the Tevere River delta, and Quaternary inactive volcanoes morphology. It also includes the visit of an archaeological site and to a wine cave.

Volcanism, tectonics and recent geomorphological change in the bay of Napoli
The trip will focus on the recent geomorphological evolution of an area of Quaternary rifting and active volcanism locatecl along the inner margin of the Apenninic thrust – belt. Among others, we will examine: – the geomorphic consequences of some events of rapid, volcano – tectonic uplift and collapse (some of which affected coastal settlements during Roman and Middle Age times); – the past and modern volcanic hazard in the area of the Vesuvio; – the Holocene dynamics of the coastline due to the interaction of eustasy, tectonics and pyroclastic aggradation. Several archaeological and cultural sites will be also visited during the trip (Napoli, Pozzuoli, Ischia, Ercolano, Pompei, Capri).

Mediterranean Erosion
Cosponsored by the IGU Working Group on “Mediterranean erosion and desertification” (MED). The field trip will deal with environmental impact of human activities in Calabria (Southern Italy). During the excursion, instrumented catchments areas intensively affected by man – induced erosion and typical mediterranean landforms, including fiumara ephemeral streams, will be visited. A one – day paper session will be held in Rende (Calabria), on August 26.

Badland processes and significance in changing
Cosponsored by the IGU Commission on “Geomorphic Response to Environmental Change” (GERTEC). The meeting will mainly aim to discuss the newest ideas about badland formation and processes in changing environments. The main topics of the meeting will be: badland genesis and processes; soil forming processes, vegetation and their interactions; effects of global change; badland reclamation. The meeting will include three paper sessions in Firenze, Siena and Cortona (Arezzo) and three field trips to badland areas in Toscana.

Classical Karst
Cosponsored by the International Union of Speleology (IUS). Aim of the meeting is to focus on some of the main topics of karstology, with special reference to middle latitude karst in pure limestone rocks; to the evolution of ideas about karst, karst processes, closed depressions, and to typical examples of karst evolution, karst features as containers of information on the past. The meeting will include five half – day thematic sessions in Lipiza (Slovenja) and field trips to hypogean and epigean karst landforms both in Italy and Slovenja.

Mountain permafrost and slope stability in the periglacial belt of the mountain environment
Cosponsored by the IPA Working Group on “Mountain Permafrost”. The meeting will include visits to classical mountain permafrost sites in both the Swiss and Italian Alps. The main topics will be: rock glaciers, borehole investigation and long – term monitoring of creeping permafrost, permafrost and snow – avalanches, protections against debris flows and avalanche in permafrost areas, periglacial and glacial landforms. A one – day paper session on “Mountain Permafrost Monitoring and Mapping” will be held in Bormio on August 27.
