Studio gravimetrico della Valle di Maratea (Basilicata) – Detailed gravimetric investigation in the Maratea Valley (Basilicata, Italy)

Pages 71-78

In order to point out the buried geo-stractural features and to value the densities and the thickness of the outcroppings that are present in the Maratea Valley a detailed gravity prospecting has been carried out. The gravity survey is composed of 182 gravity stations located on an area of 64 km2. By means of the Parasnis method the mean density value for the outcropping terrains has been computed: this value is 2.37 g/cm’. Utilizing the density value of 2.37 g/cm’ a Bouguer map has been realized and shows higher values of gravity corresponding to the carbonatic outcrops, while the lower gravity values are located on the central part of the valley. The residual anomalies map, n-1 order, shows small positive and negative gravity anomalies due to density variations of the outcropping terrains. The grater thickness of the landslide and of the detritic belts, having a lower density in comparison with the bedrock are showed by negative residual anomalies. The results of the gravity prospecting supply further information and confirm the structural setting of the studied area, that could be seen as a tectonic depression whose opening activity control the thickness and the distribution of detrital covers togheter to the observed slope instability.
